Primarily the papers of Charles Stoddard, a Boston merchant, and his son Charles A. Stoddard, a New York Presbyterian minister and editor of the New York Observer. The former's papers include texts of sermons heard in Boston from 1814-1827; a commonplace-book containing literary extracts; a brief journal of a tour through Mass., R.I., and Ct. to New York and return through New York state and across Mass. (1820); and a Stoddard family genealogy begun by him in 1822. Charles A. Stoddard papers include a vol. containing copies of letters written to him as a baby (1834-38); a Sabbath notebook containing notes of worship and Sunday school (1845-46); papers and poems related to his time as a student at Williams College (Class of 1854), including his "reasons for not choosing Cambridge College"; and notes for marriage services he performed as a Presbyterian minister (1895). (Cont'd) Additional papers include a letter from Jonathan Edwards (1738); a letter from William Shirley and a commission to Col. John Stoddard of the Mass. Provincial Forces during King George's War (1747); and appointments as Justice of the Peace and other positions to Solomon Stoddard of Northampton.
